Instagram auto-posting requirements: Business account setup

Published

Every tool that publishes to Instagram for you — SOSPosting included — goes through Meta's Graph API, and Meta sets the entry requirements. Here's exactly what they are and how to satisfy them in about ten minutes.

If a scheduler ever failed to connect your Instagram, it almost certainly wasn't the tool — it was one of Meta's three requirements not being met. They apply to every third-party app equally:

  • A professional (Business) Instagram account — personal profiles cannot be published to via the API, full stop.
  • A Facebook Page linked to that Instagram account — the API authenticates through the Page, so no Page means no connection.
  • You must be an admin of that Page, so you can grant the tool permission during Facebook login.

Instagram connects through Facebook Login for Business.

Step 1: switch Instagram to a Business account

  1. In the Instagram app: Settings → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account.
  2. Pick Business. (Creator accounts exist too, but Business is the type every posting API supports without caveats.)
  3. Choose a category — it's cosmetic and can be hidden from your profile.

The switch is free, takes a minute, and is reversible. You also get profile analytics and a contact button thrown in.

Step 2: link a Facebook Page

  1. No Page yet? Create one at facebook.com/pages/create — a bare Page with just a name is enough.
  2. In Instagram: Edit profile → Page (or Settings → Business tools and controls), then connect the Page. Alternatively link it from the Facebook side in the Page's settings under Linked accounts.
  3. Make sure the Facebook account you'll sign in with is an admin of that Page.

This is the step most connection failures trace back to — an Instagram linked to the wrong Page, or to no Page at all. If a connection fails, check the link in Meta's Accounts Center first.

Step 3: connect the tool

In SOSPosting, open Integrations → Instagram and sign in with Facebook. Grant the requested Page and Instagram permissions, pick your Page, and the linked Instagram Business account is detected automatically. Tokens refresh themselves after that — you won't be re-prompted weekly.

What you can publish once connected

  • Photo posts — image, caption and hashtags published directly, no taps in the app.
  • Reels — vertical video; Meta transcodes it (a few minutes for heavy files) and the Reel goes live with the caption included.

In SOSPosting the caption and hashtags are written by AI per platform — an Instagram-native caption, not a copy of your TikTok text. Both post types can be scheduled up to 60 days ahead.

The limits nobody mentions

  • 25 API posts per rolling 24 hours — Meta's cap per Instagram account. Irrelevant for normal use, worth knowing if you bulk-schedule.
  • Stories and carousels aren't part of SOSPosting's flow — it publishes photo posts and Reels, which is where feed reach lives.
  • Media comes from a URL: Meta fetches your image/video from the tool's storage rather than accepting raw bytes — handled for you, but it's why some DIY scripts fail.

Set up once, publish everywhere

The ten-minute setup pays off beyond Instagram: the same SOSPosting upload can go to TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Facebook and Threads in one publish — up to 5 networks for a single video — see posting to Instagram and TikTok at the same time, or the Instagram integration page for the short version of these steps.

Post once. Publish everywhere.

Cross-post to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Shopify and six more platforms from one place — with AI-written captions and Google Ads on autopilot.
