Instagram Reels and TikTok want the same raw material: a vertical 9:16 video. What differs is everything around it — caption style, hashtags, and crucially how much each platform lets a tool automate. Understanding that difference is the key to posting to both at once without nasty surprises:
- Instagram allows full auto-publishing through Meta's Graph API: a tool can push the video and the caption live with no taps from you — as long as you use a Business account linked to a Facebook Page.
- TikTok only allows fully hands-off publishing after a strict Content Posting audit most tools never pass. The reliable route is the draft flow: the video is uploaded into your TikTok drafts, and you tap Post in the app.

What you need before you start
- An Instagram Business account linked to a Facebook Page — Meta's hard requirement for any API posting. Our Instagram setup guide walks through it in about ten minutes.
- A TikTok account — any account works; no business conversion needed for the draft flow.
- One vertical video (9:16). Keep it under 60 seconds and it works everywhere without edits.
The flow, step by step
- Connect both platforms in SOSPosting's Integrations: Instagram via Facebook login (pick your Page — the linked Instagram account is detected automatically), TikTok via TikTok's own login.
- Upload the video once in the composer — or send it to the SOSPosting Telegram bot from your phone.
- Let the AI write per-platform captions. You get an Instagram caption with hashtags and a shorter, hook-first TikTok caption — separately, in your brand voice. Edit or replace either before publishing.
- Hit Publish (or schedule it up to 60 days ahead). Instagram transcodes the Reel and it goes live automatically, caption included.
- Finish TikTok with one tap. The video lands in your TikTok drafts with a notification. Open the app, paste the prepared caption, tap Post.
The honest trade-offs
- TikTok's caption isn't pre-filled. TikTok's draft API doesn't accept a description, so the AI caption is ready for you to paste — one tap, but a tap. The full detail is in our TikTok no-audit guide.
- Instagram needs a Business account. Personal profiles can't be auto-posted to by any tool — that's Meta's rule, not ours.
- One video serves both. That's the point, but it means no platform-specific edits (TikTok text overlays, IG stickers). For most product and creator content, the caption differences matter far more.
- Instagram transcoding takes a few minutes for heavy files — the post confirms once Meta reports the Reel is live.
Why not just use each app's own cross-post button?
Instagram can share Reels to Facebook, and TikTok can save watermarked videos you re-upload — but neither writes native captions, neither covers the other platform properly, and TikTok watermarks on Instagram Reels measurably hurt reach. Publishing the clean source file to each platform, with a caption written for each, is what actually performs.
Doing it with SOSPosting
SOSPosting runs exactly this flow — and the same upload can also go to YouTube Shorts, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, WordPress and Shopify in the same publish. See the Instagram integration and TikTok integration pages for the connection steps, or the full cross-posting guide for all ten platforms.
